Petropods - the new Petrogrips
The origional Petrogrips were pieces of granite or sandstone that were converted into handholds by grinding one side flat and countersinking a hole for the bolt. The new Petropods are better because we can use the best quailty rock! Petropods can be made from nearly any strong rock but I'm a sticky rock addict so that means a super sticky, fontainebleau quality sandstone, gritstone, diabase, or gneiss. This is the stuff you want to hold on to.

Petropods are pieces of actual rock permenantly embeded into a pod matrix of polyurethane and steel. You climb on the rock. The surrounding bombproof pod matrix is a no-step, no-grab surface. Petropods last forever and the rock will break before it pulls out of the matrix.

Geology of our rock - what's gritstone, font sandstone, diabase, gneiss?

Because all PetroPods are different, we have a unique way of selling them. If you want pods, email and let us know the approximate amount and sizes and we will put a set on ebay. You get to see the actual set - and the price will be set by the market. The base price for the holds reflects material cost and the bare minimum I will accept for labor cost.

The smallest pod is the oval shaped econopod. They are usually good 3-finger edges and pinches. The pod is deep enough so the rock can stick out an inch or so.

The next largest size is the shallow 4x4 triangle. This pod was built around 4" long hardened masonary nails in a triangle to provide an efficent and strong steel backbone that makes up the core of the pod. Even though this pod is thin and low profile, it's exceptionaly stiff. With the right rocks, these pods can make incut flakes, wide pinches or even slopers.
The next size pod we call the standard oval. The pod is deep enough so some petty large holds can be embedded. Multiple rocks can be arranged to form interesting and realistic climbing shapes.
The next size pod is the 4x4 thick triangle. This is an amazingly stiff pod as the masonary nails are stacked 3 deep. Deep enough to embed some pretty large and incut holds for steep walls. Really stiff so that when you yard off of this hold on a steep wall it feels stiff as a rock.
The 6" long oval fits some pretty big jugs. This is also a good size for some really big two-handed flakes. We've made some of these that stick out 4" or more and at first you think there is no way that can hold. But after you jump up down on it a few times yo start to realize that the polyurethane to rock bond is a pretty amazing thing.
Oval PetroPods made from non-clear poly. These are early protos without the screw-on holes. The solid poly comes in a slightly softer shore than the clear poly so it is nearly impossible to crack, chip or break.
The largest pods we are calling the "port-holes." Port holes are "portals" into the world of real rock. Bolt on by any of the 4 washers or screw-on. This is a low profile hold with a large "rock estate" area. Contains a whole lot of steel to keep it stiff.
